In this podcast episode, Daphne Wells and I discuss the topic of self-sabotage and the concept of positive intelligence. This conversation shed light on why we self-sabotage, the role of our brain's saboteurs, and how we can take control of our thoughts and actions.

In this blog post, I'll break down some key questions asked during the interview and explore the insights shared by Daphne.

Why do we self-sabotage?
Daphne explained that self-sabotage is hardwired into our brains as a survival mechanism. Our ancestors needed to respond negatively first to protect themselves from threats. However, in today's world, this negative response can hinder our personal and professional growth.

What is positive intelligence?
Positive intelligence is a concept that combines positive psychology, cognitive behavior psychology, neuroscience, and performance science. It focuses on increasing our mental fitness and rewiring our brains to respond positively rather than negatively. By practicing mental fitness, we can choose which side of our brain fires and ultimately increase our positive intelligence.

How does blame play a role in self-sabotage?
Blaming ourselves for self-sabotage is a common response, but Daphne emphasized that it is not our fault. Our brain's saboteurs are responsible for the negative thoughts and behaviors. By recognizing this, we can shift our perspective and take ownership of our thoughts and actions, empowering ourselves to overcome self-sabotage.

Daphne also shared a simple exercise to help us ground ourselves in stressful situations. By rubbing two fingertips together and focusing on the sensation, we can shift our attention from our thoughts to our bodies. This exercise helps us become more aware of our physical presence and reduces stress. If you're reading this and thinking, 'that seems weird,' don't worry, I did too, and I discussed why with Daphne.

At the end of the day, understanding self-sabotage and developing positive intelligence is a powerful journey toward personal and professional growth. By recognizing the role of our brain's saboteurs, practicing mental fitness, and cultivating awareness, we can break free from self-sabotaging patterns and embrace a more positive and fulfilling life.
