If every career decision is based primarily on how If every career decision is based primarily on how much money you can make and how quickly you can make it, you may eventually end up somewhere you didn’t intend to go.

I have seen many professionals design their careers this way, only to reach the mid or later stages of their careers and realize they dislike the work they are doing and feel stuck there.

Compensation matters, but it can’t be the only lens for evaluating opportunities.

A more useful question is what a particular decision is likely to set you up for next and where it might lead over time.

“This is better than what I’m doing right now” may feel like a clear improvement in the moment, but that does not always mean it is a strategic career decision.

The moment you become an expert in your role is us The moment you become an expert in your role is usually when the conversation about skills needs to change.

Early in your career, it makes sense to focus on the work directly in front of you because you have to build the skills required to execute the job well.

But once you understand the position and know how to do it well, focusing only on those tasks starts to limit you.

This usually means paying attention to the larger problems across the organization, not just the problems tied to your position, and figuring out how your skills connect to those problems.

You want to be the person being called into conversation because they recognize the value you’ll add.
