It's no secret that The Great Resignation is a hot topic in the world of work right now. We are seeing people leave jobs in record numbers and there are a lot of statistics and numbers being thrown around without much context.

This episode will help you understand the data behind The Great Resignation including the insane level of bias these statistics reflect and whether we should believe everything we hear.

I've spent the last 6-8 months listening, observing, and reading about The Great Resignation and this episode is a collection of common issues I'm observing as to why professionals are leaving their jobs, assumptions people are making based on unclear data, and the realities - positive and negative - which are likely going to upset some people.

This is a real look at what is happening and my purpose is to inform as well as call out the bias and privilege I'm witnessing.

Along with helping you see all sides to The Great Resignation, I also provide some tips for professionals in a variety of scenarios including:
  • What can employers/managers do?
  • What can professionals do who want to change jobs?
  • What can professionals do who want to stay in their job?
  • What about professionals who feel stuck in their position? Either financially, location, medical, abilities.

Why is this important?

As a career strategist and coach, I want professionals, especially corporate professionals, to understand what is happening in the world of work. I want people to know there are opportunities out there right now because of this shift in the workforce. I also don't want professionals to ever feel like they are stuck or missing out when the news and social media are telling only one side of the story.

Your career path and jobs are so unique to who you are, your skill set, your values, and the opportunities available to you. This shift in the world of work will hopefully be positive in that employers and managers will make changes and professionals will realize there is more out there than they think.

It's time to do the work and explore the possibilities.

Here are the original articles where the majority of news outlets grabbed their data - the stats I mentioned in the beginning of the episode:

"One in four US workers will look for a new job when the pandemic eases up..." - based on a survey of 2000 professionals - https://news.prudential.com/shifting-worker-expectations-guide-coming-talent-migration.htm

"Microsoft finds that 40% of the global workforce is weighing leaving their current employer this year..." - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/worklab/work-trend-index/hybrid-work

"Monster reports 95% of workers are currently considering changing jobs..." - Based on a survey of 649 professionals - https://www.businessinsider.com/labor-shortage-workers-quitting-quit-job-pandemic-covid-survey-monster-2021-7 and https://learnmore.monster.com/job-index-in-the-time-of-coronavirus I couldn't find the actual statistic on Monster's website.

A little bit about Julia:

I started this journey in a counseling-focused master of science program where my then passion was working with college students. I spent 8 years working in higher education in various roles within university career offices helping everyone from freshmen to doctoral students to mid-career alumni to encore career alumni figure out their path in their current season of life. I spent my time coaching and creating career programs and I'm using that experience to create a career management and advancement program that is everything you need to get where you want to go.

I found my niche and passion working with new and mid-career managers who have lost their way, are in toxic environments, or who are so high-achieving they don't know where they fit in the working world. I support and respect the need for people to have a 9-5 job and I help you find your place and path in your career journey.

I'm also certified and educationally eligible to administer and interpret multiple personality and interest assessments, which I use in my coaching program.

It's important to note that I didn't wake up one day and decide to do this work. I'm highly trained in coaching and counseling, have been part of multiple career-related professional associations and I LOVE this work.

I look forward to connecting with you and helping you find success in you career, whatever that looks like for you.
