Season 13: Career Leverage
How to Stay Market-Ready in a Changing Job Market
Podcast Audio Only:
Over the last twenty years, professionals have navigated a recession, the rise of LinkedIn, remote work, return-to-office mandates, a global pandemic, widespread layoffs, and now the rapid growth of artificial intelligence. Some industries have expanded dramatically while others have struggled, creating new opportunities and new challenges along the way.
In this episode of Control Your Career, I explore what it means to stay market-ready and why career leverage often comes down to being prepared before you need to make a change.
Why Market Conditions Matter
Many people focus on their career as a personal journey, but every career exists within a broader market. Hiring demand changes. Industries grow and contract. New skills become valuable while others become less relevant.
The challenge is that these changes often happen gradually and by the time many people notice them, the market has already shifted.
Paying attention to industry trends, hiring patterns, and broader economic conditions won't eliminate uncertainty, but it can help you make better career decisions and identify opportunities earlier.
Careers Are Personal. Employment Is a Market.
One of the biggest sources of frustration in career development is that what you want and what the market wants don't always align.
You may want to move into a specific field, pursue a leadership role, or find a more flexible position. Those goals are important, but they exist alongside market realities such as hiring demand, competition, and available opportunities.
I've worked with professionals who were pursuing careers that simply weren't hiring, and I've worked with people who had highly sought-after skills and were being recruited regularly. Neither situation had much to do with motivation or work ethic.
Understanding yourself matters, but understanding the market matters too.
Why Having Options Changes Decision-Making
When professionals understand their options, they're often more willing to advocate for themselves, explore opportunities, and make thoughtful career decisions. When they feel trapped, fear can start influencing the way they think about their future.
This doesn't mean everyone needs dozens of opportunities available to them. It means understanding what options exist and how those options align with their goals.
The more awareness you have of your opportunities, the more intentional your decisions become.
Staying Market-Ready
Staying market-ready doesn't mean constantly searching for a new job. In many cases, it comes down to maintaining a few simple habits:
- Keep your resume reasonably current.
- Track major accomplishments and projects.
- Maintain relationships with colleagues and professional contacts.
- Pay attention to changes within your industry.
- Continue developing relevant skills.
These activities are easy to postpone when things are going well, but they're often the same activities that make career transitions easier when circumstances change.
Questions to Ask Yourself
A simple way to evaluate your career readiness is to ask yourself a few questions:
- Could you clearly explain the value you bring to an organization?
- Could you update your resume quickly?
- Could you identify strong professional references?
- Could you explain your transferable skills?
- Could you describe the type of role you'd pursue next?
The goal is to understand how prepared you are if circumstances change or a new opportunity appears.
Market conditions will continue to evolve, industries will continue to change, and opportunities will continue to emerge in unexpected places. Staying engaged with your career can help you navigate those changes with greater confidence and flexibility.
