My Observations on Workforce Dynamics: The Future My Observations on Workforce Dynamics: The Future of Retirement and Leadership

Here are some observations I’ve been seeing and actions to consider for both organizations and professionals:

Baby Boomers Delaying Retirement:
➡ Many baby boomers are choosing not to retire, either due to financial necessity or a lack of alternative activities.
➡ During the pandemic, while some boomers retired, many continued to work, highlighting a trend that is likely to persist.
➡ This creates barriers for younger generations seeking advancement as leadership positions remain occupied.

Millennials and Work-Life Balance:
➡ Millennials are re-evaluating their career goals post-pandemic.
➡ There is a noticeable shift towards valuing work-life balance over climbing the corporate ladder.
➡ Many millennials prefer individual contributor roles rather than leadership positions. They don’t want the stress.

Implications for Gen X and Millennials:
➡ With boomers staying longer in the workforce, Gen X and millennials find fewer opportunities for advancement.
➡ This could lead to frustration and a lack of motivation to pursue higher roles, impacting the future pipeline of leaders.

ACTIONS TO CONSIDER:

🏢 Organizations:

✅ Develop clear succession plans to ensure leadership roles are available for younger generations.
✅ Offer roles that accommodate the work-life balance priorities of millennials.
✅ Invest in leadership training and development programs to prepare Gen X and millennials for future roles.

🧑‍💼 Individuals:

✅ Millennials and Gen X should consider career strategies that align with their long-term goals and current market dynamics.
✅ Focus on continuous skill development to remain competitive and adaptable in a changing job market.
✅ Build and maintain professional networks to discover new opportunities and mentorship.

💡 The evolving workforce landscape requires both employers and employees to adapt.

Understanding these trends and preparing for them will be crucial for maintaining a dynamic and effective workplace.

“Thank you for being a true ‘girls girl’!” This w “Thank you for being a true ‘girls girl’!”

This was a phrase I said to Jenny during our interview because she was one of the most supportive female managers I’ve ever had.

Her impact on me was huge, helping me regain my confidence and reminding me of my worth as a professional.

I had to include this clip in my promos because amazing leaders deserve to be celebrated in public, especially female leaders! 🙌🏻

I am thrilled to have Jenny Darroch, PhD, the esteemed Dean of the Farmer School of Business at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio on the podcast. The conversation was rich with insights from Jenny’s corporate and academic life.

We discuss Jenny’s background, her leadership style rooted in dignity and respect, and the hiring process, including the importance of cover letters and traditional resumes in academia, and more. We also touch on the complexities of navigating higher education’s hierarchical structure and recognizing one’s place and value within an organization.

From her corporate beginnings in New Zealand to her influential role in academia, she has consistently demonstrated a passion for leadership and making a tangible difference in students’ lives.

Her leadership style, shaped primarily by her time at the Drucker School, is rooted in creating space for team members to excel, emphasizing how leaders can be effective and empathetic at the same time.
