Everyone says they’re burned out. But what if you’re just bored?

If you’ve been dragging yourself through the workday, counting down to Friday, and wondering why you have zero motivation, it might not be burnout…it might be something else. The problem is, burnout and boredom look almost identical: low energy, lack of focus, and that “I just don’t care anymore” feeling.

Am I Burned Out or Just Bored?
Here’s the quick test I give my clients: if you’re exhausted all the time, even after a full weekend off, it’s burnout. If you’re fine outside of work but feel flat and unmotivated during the day, it’s boredom.

Both can leave you drained and disconnected, but the reason behind each one is very different. Burnout usually means your values are being violated. Boredom means your interests are misaligned.

Why Do We Confuse the Two?
We’ve normalized burnout to the point where we call everything burnout. Anytime we feel off, it’s the default label. But not everything that feels heavy is burnout. Sometimes, you’ve just outgrown your role.

Before you make a big decision, like quitting or switching jobs, check your energy. Your body often knows the difference before your brain catches up.

What Should I Do If It’s Burnout?
If it’s burnout, you need recovery, not more productivity. That might mean setting boundaries, asking for help, or taking a real break. You can’t “work through” burnout, it doesn’t respond to effort.

What Should I Do If It’s Boredom?
If it’s boredom, it’s time to shake things up. Ask for a new project, learn something new, or explore what kind of challenge you’re craving. Sometimes the job isn’t the problem, you’ve just outgrown it.

How Do I Figure Out What’s Next?
Start by being honest about what’s draining you. Burnout means something’s broken and needs repair. Boredom means something’s missing and needs to be added. Once you identify which one it is, you can start moving forward intentionally instead of reacting.

If this hit a little too close to home, the full episode of Control Your Career goes deeper into how to tell the difference and what each one is trying to tell you about your career.
