Season 1: Should I Quit My Job?

This is one of my favorite topics because it is the foundation for every decision you will make! You have to know what drives you and what is at the core of who you are and what you want in life.

Your values can change depending on your season of life or if any major shifts happen in your life. This could be going to school, getting married, dating someone new, starting a family, getting a dog, a death in the family, a job change, among others.

I recommend you review your values anytime a big change or event happens OR when you are starting feel off, unhappy, or unsettled in work or life.

In this episode, I give examples of how to figure out your values based on everyday situations you encounter. Because identifying your values is a very personal exercise, I have included a freebie values assessment PDF to help you outline and articulate your values.

Season 1: Should I Quit My Job?
This episode is about who you are, your personality traits, and providing resources to help you articulate your personality if this is a challenging exercise for you. It’s all about the internal assessment.

The meat of this episode presents different questions to get you to think about your personality in every-day work situations. Think about how you operate and what you would prefer.

Remember, this podcast isn’t just about me speaking to you, it’s about taking action.

I thought I knew myself pretty well after working for a while and going to grad school, but I soon realized that I had a host of preferences I didn’t know I had. I also started paying attention to others preferences so I could learn and be mindful of what worked best for them. This type of attention is what creates a positive work environment and creates trust among colleagues.

I also go into Emotional Intelligence to define what it is, the 5 components, and why it’s important to your career success.

There are three personality assessments I recommend in the episode:
1. MBTI – Meyers-Briggs Type Assessment
2. Clifton Strengths
3. Enneagram

I want to caveat first that assessments are a starting point. They will not magically answer all of life’s questions for you, though some feel that way. You won’t always agree with the results, which is actually good because it means you are learning to articulate who you are!

These aren’t the only assessments out there, but they are the ones I use frequently and prefer over others. Here are links to helpful websites for these assessments:

1. MBTI – Meyers-Briggs Type Assessment
  • You can find free MBTI assessment online, but they will not replace the real assessment. MBTI can only be distributed by a certified coach. When I start up coaching in 2020, the MBTI will be an assessment I use with clients. Please sign up to receive our emails so you are the first to know when coaching is available.
  • https://www.16personalities.com This is my favorite site for quick MBTI information and content.

2. Clifton Strengths

3. Enneagram

Season 1: Should I Quit My Job?
That’s right, I’m giving you the answer to the season up front. Why? Because you have to decide if doing this work and digging in will be right for you.

So many people either don’t appreciate the position they have OR they know they want more, but they don’t know where to start.

We are going to assess ourselves two different ways – internal and external. The internal assessment will look at what you can control and the external assessment will evaluate what is out of your control and how to manage it. Each episode will walk you through different considerations and provide prompts and examples to help you evaluate these internal and external considerations for yourself.

This episode outlines five scenarios that you might identify with to determine whether you should quit your job.

1. I’ve outgrown my position and I’m not sure where to go next.
2. I like my job enough, but something is missing.
3. I’m in a toxic environment and I need to get out, but I don’t know how or where to go next.
4. I’m ambitious and I want to move ahead quickly in my career. The position I am in doesn’t allow me to grow or expand my skill set.
5. Technically, there is a fifth option, which is you love your job and don’t plan to leave any time soon.

If you fall into any of these scenarios, welcome! Let’s go on this journey together. I would love to know which scenario you identify with and what questions you have that you would like answered. When you subscribe to our email list, you can reply to any of the emails you receive or send me a DM on Instagram.
